For a fourth year running The Black Horse is excited to announce another Play at the Pub; Jessica Swale’s “Nell Gwynn” performed by the Changeling Theatre.
“They’ve disgraced our trade. Ruined our art. They’ve put a woman on the stage!”
London, 1660, King Charles II has exploded onto the scene with the love of all things loud, extravagant and sexy. And at Drury Lane a young Nell Gwynn is causing stirrings amongst the theatregoers. Nell Gwynn charts the rise of an unlikely heroine, from her roots in Coal Yard Alley, to her success as Britain’s most celebrated actress, and her hard won place in the heart of the King. But at a time when women are second class citizens, can her charm and spirit protect her from the dangers of the court?
The British playwright Jessica Swale’s Nell Gwynn premiered at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2015 and was nominated for five awards, winning a 2016 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.
Performed by the professional actors of the Changeling Theatre company. For further information on the Changeling Theatre go to http://changeling-theatre.com/
The seating arrangement is casual so please bring your own chair or rug. Please note that due to the limited space in our garden, no gazebos, tables etc are permitted. You will be allocated your space by a person from the production company on the day.
Hopefully we will have good weather but we British are made of sterner stuff so bring your waterproofs just in case! There will be umbrellas to hire on the day but you may bring your own. We also recommend you bring a blanket or something warm to wrap up in as the temperature can drop as the afternoon turns to evening.
