Our Food Ethos

We have championed the use of local produce for decades. Surrounded by amazing farms, our skilled chef’s devise menus showcasing the best Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire and their neighbouring counties have to offer.

As a small family owned and run restaurant we believe in building up great partnerships with other family businesses around us, that’s why we’re proud to use local family-run farms, growers and butchers with the same ethos regarding ethical farming for all our fresh ingredients, wherever possible.

Lunch & Dinner Menu

Our new Autumn/Winter Lunch & Dinner Menu is full of exciting new dishes made from fresh seasonal ingredients.

Our stunning new starters include Pressed Partridge Terrine served with a pear and saffron chutney and treacle soda bread, and Slow Cooked Beer & Soy Glazed Pork Belly with sweet and sour pineapple jam and puffed black rice – both available to up-grade to a lighter main, for those of you who just fancy a light bite instead of a full main course, or add some sides to make a real meal of it!

For main course let us tempt you with one of our new delicious dishes, like Almond Crusted Grey Mullet with saffron poached potato, braised fennel, brown shrimp and lemon dressing and bronze fennel, or how about a Butternut Squash & Gorgonzola Risotto finished with toasted pumpkin seeds, lemon oil and micro cress; warming comfort food on those cold autumn days.

For those of you that love the classics, we still have our popular Homemade Chargrilled Burger made from locally sourced beef, served in a toasted brioche bun, black garlic burger sauce, maple glazed smoky bacon, artisan cheese, baby gem lettuce, beef tomato, gherkin, red onion, house slaw and french fries, and the iconic ‘Black Horse’ Beer Battered Fillet of Fish, a sustainably caught fillet of haddock in a crisp gluten-free lager batter, served with triple cooked chunky chips, minted crushed garden peas, tartare sauce and grilled lemon. Both also available on our Sunday Lunch menu as an alternative to the traditional roasts.

And, as if that’s not enough to excite your appetites, we also have our ‘From The Grill’ section of our menu offering mouth-watering meats cooked on the char-grill and served with chunky chips, home-smoked cherry tomatoes on the vine, rocket salad with ranch dressing and a choice of Chimichurri, Peppercorn & Brandy Sauce or Black Garlic Butter.  Choose from Sirloin or Ribeye Steak, Pork Tomahawk, Barnsley Lamb Chop or Beer-Brined Chicken Breast.  You can also elevate your dining with Fillet Steak  or Chateaubriand when pre-ordered 48hrs in advance.

Sunday Lunch

We know many of you can’t imagine a Sunday without a Traditional Sunday Roast, so of course these are available on our new Sunday Menu.  Choose from Sirloin of Beef, Leg of Lamb, Loin of Pork and Chicken Supreme – all locally sourced from independent butchers – or our vegetarian Nut Roast, all served with roast potatoes, roast parsnips, roasted glazed carrots, seasonal green vegetables, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire pudding and roast gravy.

But it’s not all roasts – alongside our popular Homemade Chargrilled Burger and the impressive ‘Black Horse’ Beer Battered Fish & Chips, we also offer our chef’s Fresh Fish of The Day, which changes each week depending on the catch! Our new starters can also be ordered as a lighter main so you can enjoy Maple Cured Salmon with chicory jam, granny smith apple gel, homemade cracker bread and nasturtium leaves, or Wild Mushroom Tart with balsamic glazed baby onions, polenta coated bocconcini, cep cream and tarragon oil – autumn on a plate!

Still hungry for more? Grab a spoon and tuck into one of our scrumptious new desserts, like our Spiced Rum Baba with poached plum, whipped lemon curd and Madagascan vanilla ice cream, or our Espresso Crème Caramel with pistachio ice cream and a cranberry and pistachio biscotti – which is not only utterly delicious, but also dairy free, gluten free and vegan!
